Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a serious eye disease that can lead to permanent vision loss if left untreated. Often developing without noticeable symptoms, it gradually damages the optic nerve, making early detection critical. At Eyedeal Vision, Dr. Derrick Badaracco and his team prioritize proactive eye care, using advanced diagnostic technology to catch glaucoma in its earliest stages.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause progressive damage to the optic nerve, usually due to increased intraocular pressure (IOP). The condition can develop slowly over time or emerge rapidly, leading to significant vision impairment if left untreated. Because early symptoms are often subtle or nonexistent, many people don’t realize they have glaucoma until their vision is already affected.

Understanding the different types of glaucoma is essential for early detection and treatment. The most common forms include:

  • Open-Angle Glaucoma – The most prevalent form, characterized by slow drainage of eye fluid, leading to increased eye pressure and gradual optic nerve damage.

  • Angle-Closure Glaucoma – A more sudden and severe form caused by blocked drainage, leading to a rapid spike in eye pressure. This is a medical emergency requiring immediate attention.

  • Normal-Tension Glaucoma – Occurs despite normal eye pressure levels, potentially due to poor blood flow to the optic nerve.

Who Is at Risk for Glaucoma?

Anyone can develop glaucoma, but some individuals face a higher risk. Key risk factors include:

  • Age – People over 60 are at greater risk.

  • Family History – A strong genetic link exists, so a family history of glaucoma increases your likelihood of developing the condition.

  • Ethnicity – African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians have a higher risk of certain types of glaucoma.

  • Medical Conditions – Diabetes, high blood pressure, and migraines may contribute to glaucoma risk.

  • Prolonged Steroid Use – Long-term use of corticosteroids, especially eye drops, can raise intraocular pressure.

What to Expect During a Glaucoma Exam

Glaucoma is often referred to as the "silent thief of sight" because it progresses without noticeable symptoms. The only way to detect it early is through comprehensive eye exams. We use cutting-edge technology to thoroughly examine your eye health and detect signs of glaucoma before they impact your vision.

A thorough glaucoma evaluation includes several specialized tests:

  • Tonometry – Measures intraocular pressure to assess the risk of glaucoma.

  • Ophthalmoscopy – Examines the optic nerve for signs of damage.

  • Visual Field Test – Detects peripheral vision loss, an early indicator of glaucoma.

  • Optomap Retinal Imaging – Provides a wide-field view of the retina without dilation, enhancing early detection of glaucoma-related damage.

Early Signs of Glaucoma to Be Aware Of

Glaucoma often develops unnoticed, but some symptoms may indicate a problem:

  • Gradual loss of peripheral vision

  • Blurred vision

  • Eye pain or pressure

  • Halos around lights

  • Frequent headaches

  • Sudden vision loss

If you experience any of these symptoms, schedule an eye exam immediately.

Glaucoma Treatment Options

While glaucoma cannot be cured, treatment can slow its progression and protect your vision. Depending on your condition, Dr. Badaracco may recommend:

  • Prescription Eye Drops – Reduce intraocular pressure by decreasing fluid production or improving drainage.

  • Oral Medications – Used when eye drops alone are not sufficient.

  • Laser Therapy – If laser treatment is needed, such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) to improve fluid drainage, Dr. Badaracco will refer you to a trusted specialist for further evaluation and care.

  • Surgical Options – For advanced cases requiring minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) or traditional procedures, Dr. Badaracco will coordinate a referral to a specialist to ensure you receive the most appropriate surgical intervention.

Regular monitoring and treatment adjustments are key to managing glaucoma effectively.
